Syncro vs Atera vs ConnectWise: All-in-One RMM + PSA for Smaller MSPs

Syncro and Atera bundle RMM and PSA into one platform at a fraction of ConnectWise's cost and complexity. A comparison of all three for MSPs under about twenty technicians — what you gain, what you give up, and when to graduate.

For an MSP under about twenty technicians, the honest question is not "ConnectWise or Autotask". It is whether you need a platform that heavy at all.

Syncro and Atera both bundle RMM and PSA into a single product, priced per technician rather than per endpoint, and both get a small shop operational in days rather than months. ConnectWise sits at the other end: more capability, more cost, more administration. This compares all three for the size of business that genuinely has the choice.

The fundamental difference

ConnectWise (and Autotask) are separate RMM and PSA products that integrate. You buy the pieces, you connect them, you configure them, and the result is a stack you can shape almost arbitrarily.

Syncro and Atera are one product that does both. Tickets, remote monitoring, scripting, billing and invoicing live in the same application with the same data model. There is far less to configure because there is far less that can be configured.

That is the whole trade in one sentence: you are exchanging configurability for not having to configure anything.

Pricing shape matters more than price

The headline numbers move, so the useful thing to understand is the shape:

For a small MSP managing a lot of endpoints with few technicians, per-technician pricing is dramatically cheaper — often by a factor that makes the comparison lopsided. For a larger MSP with many technicians and a high ratio of staff to devices, the gap narrows considerably.

Run your own numbers with your actual technician and endpoint counts before taking anyone's word on this, including ours.

Syncro

Syncro leans toward MSPs who want the PSA side to be properly capable. Its ticketing, invoicing and client management feel like a real PSA rather than a ticket list bolted onto an RMM. Billing is a genuine strength for a product in this tier — recurring invoicing, payment processing and contract handling are reasonably mature.

Where it fits: a growing MSP that wants one bill, one login and a PSA they will not immediately outgrow.

Where it strains: deep automation and complex multi-tier service catalogs. If you need intricate workflow rules, you will reach the ceiling.

Atera

Atera leans toward the RMM side, with strong monitoring, patching and scripting, and has pushed hard on AI-assisted ticketing and automation. The PSA elements are competent but lighter than Syncro's — adequate ticketing and billing rather than a full professional services platform.

Where it fits: MSPs and internal IT teams whose work is mostly monitoring and maintenance rather than complex contracted service delivery.

Where it strains: sophisticated contract billing. If your agreements are unusual, you will feel the limits sooner than with Syncro.

ConnectWise

Everything in our ConnectWise vs Autotask comparison applies here. The relevant point for this article is the cost of entry: real implementation time, an administrator who owns the configuration, and a price that only makes sense at scale.

Where it fits: MSPs past roughly fifteen to twenty technicians, or with genuinely complex service delivery, or who need the ecosystem.

Where it strains: small teams. A five-person MSP on ConnectWise is usually a five-person MSP with one person quietly spending a day a week on ConnectWise.

When to graduate

The honest signals that you have outgrown an all-in-one — not a vendor's signals, the ones that actually show up in the business:

Notice what is not on that list: "we got bigger". Size alone is not a reason. Plenty of twenty-person MSPs run well on Syncro.

Migration is the hidden cost

The real reason to think about this early is that switching is expensive in a way the pricing pages do not show. Moving from an all-in-one to a separate RMM and PSA means two migrations, two implementations and a period where your team is slower at everything.

Which argues for one of two strategies:

  1. Start light and accept that you may migrate once, around the point the signals above appear. For most MSPs this is the right call — the years of lower cost and lower admin overhead usually outweigh one migration.
  2. Start heavy if you are confident about where you are going and have the appetite to implement properly on day one. This only makes sense with funding or an experienced team who have run the platform before.

What does not work is starting heavy because it feels more professional. A half-configured ConnectWise is worse than a well-used Syncro.

What none of them do

All three are built around service delivery — the work that happens after a client signs. None of them is a sales platform.

Syncro and Atera barely attempt it. ConnectWise has an opportunity module that exists mainly to turn a closed deal into an agreement. In all three cases, if you are actively trying to win new clients, the finding, pitching, quoting and proposal work happens somewhere else: a spreadsheet, a generic CRM, Word documents, and whatever is in the owner's head.

That gap is what NeroEngine fills — lead generation, a pipeline built around MSP deals, catalog-driven quoting with margin visibility, and AI-drafted proposals and SOWs. It has no ticketing, no RMM and no billing by design, and it runs alongside whichever of these three you choose. Our guide on CRM versus PSA explains where the boundary sits.

Common questions

Does Syncro have RMM and PSA in one platform? Yes. Syncro is a single product covering remote monitoring and management alongside ticketing, invoicing and client management, priced per technician with unlimited endpoints.

Is Atera a PSA or an RMM? Both, with the centre of gravity on RMM. Its ticketing and billing are real but lighter than a dedicated PSA.

Can I run Syncro or Atera with a separate PSA? You can, but you lose most of the point. The value of an all-in-one is one data model; bolting a second PSA on reintroduces the integration work you were avoiding.

Which is cheapest? Per technician, Syncro and Atera are in a similar range and both far below a ConnectWise stack for a small team. But compare on your own counts — an MSP with many technicians and few endpoints gets a very different answer from one with few technicians and many endpoints.

Do any of these generate leads? No. None of the three has meaningful lead generation, and the opportunity tracking in all three is minimal. Our MSP lead generation guide covers how MSPs actually find clients.
